A new generation of buyers and drivers — Gen Z and young millennials — is redefining what “good” looks like in the cabin. As software-defined vehicles and higher levels of autonomy move from pilots to scaled deployment, in-vehicle HMI can no longer be “just UI”; it must become the orchestration layer for safety, trust, and everyday usability. This session unpacks how modular SDV architectures can support diverse markets and use cases on a single platform, why 3D HMI must shift from eye candy to a functional layer for ADAS and navigation, and how voice and AI will become primary interaction modes for digital-native drivers and operators. Drawing on Star’s global HMI work and collaboration with IAV, we’ll share patterns, pitfalls, and decision frameworks for the next five years.
In this presentation, you will learn:
Michael Alexander is a seasoned expert in mobility electronics and software with over 30 years of industry experience at IAV. Holding MSEE and MSCS degrees, he advises organizations on strategic decisions in HMI design, UX/UI, vehicle networking (CAN, LIN, Automotive Ethernet), and autonomous driving technologies including sensors, perception, sensor fusion, and path planning. His expertise spans model-based development, algorithm design, machine learning and AI, as well as connected-vehicle solutions shaping the future of mobility.
Alexander Mukomelov is a Design Director at Star based in San Francisco, California. With over 13 years of experience in automotive and mobility design, he leads cross-functional teams creating HMI and ADAS experiences, multi-brand design systems, companion apps, and AI-powered in-vehicle assistants for passenger and commercial vehicles. His work focuses on human-in-the-loop autonomy, the needs of emerging Gen Z and young millennials, in-cabin user personalization and evidence-based design driven by data. Previously, Alexander was Lead Designer at Shell Digital Ventures, where he built products for energy management, EV charging, IoT, and logistics.
