James Jenness is an Associate Director at Westat and manager of human factors research within Westat’s Center for Transportation, Technology, and Safety Research. He has conducted numerous automotive projects for government clients such as National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, safety organizations such as IIHS and AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, and automotive companies. His work often focuses on drivers’ behaviors and understanding while using in-vehicle technologies. Over the past few years, Dr. Jenness managed projects on evaluation of voice control systems and another program on human factors issues related to the HMI for Connected Vehicles. He has also conducted research to examine how various types of driver feedback (particularly for teenagers) may be effective for moderating speeding and aggressive driving behavior and for improving seatbelt use and fuel economy. His professional background includes experience designing visual and auditory user interfaces for commercial products. Dr. Jenness earned a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Michigan.
