Session

LiDAR in Autonomous Vehicles – Trends, Architectures, and Design Trade-offs Across Platforms

B | LiDAR Technologies Track | Case Study

Monday, December 08

11:15 am - 11:40 am

Live in Dearborn, Michigan

Less Details

LiDAR continues to play a pivotal role in enabling autonomous driving, but its implementation varies greatly across different vehicle platforms. This session explores the latest trends in LiDAR technology within the autonomous vehicle space and provides an overview of key LiDAR system architectures from mechanical spinning units to hybrid and solid-state designs highlighting the advantages and trade-offs of each approach. We will discuss how LiDAR sourcing and performance requirements differ between passenger AVs and autonomous trucks, where factors such as range, durability, field of view, and integration drive distinct design and supplier strategies. The session will also examine emerging in-cabin LiDAR use cases, comparing how sensing priorities vary between commercial trucks and passenger vehicles to support safety, awareness, and driver monitoring.

In this session, you will learn:

  • The evolving trends in LiDAR technology and architecture
  • How vehicle mission profiles influence LiDAR selection and sourcing
  • Key differences in in-cabin LiDAR requirements for trucks versus passenger AVs
